You’ve probably seen it happen—the humidity gets inside, things start to corrode, and eventually, the whole thing just quits on you. That’s why we’re moving toward high IP-rated infrared systems. Basically, they’re built to actually handle a bathroom without shorting out.
The secret to keeping the steam out
Here is the thing about standard heaters: steam is sneaky. It finds its way into the housing and eats away at the terminals. The better units use sealed gaskets and special coatings to keep the moisture where it belongs—outside. This is a huge deal because if a cold water droplet hits that scorching hot glass, the tube can literally crack from the shock. No one wants that happening over their head. A few things to watch during install
If you’re putting these in, keep an eye on your ceiling clearance. You don’t want the heater sitting too flush against the ceiling, or you’ll end up “heat soaking” your materials. If you’ve got PVC or cheap drywall up there, that’s a recipe for trouble. Also, remember that short-wave infrared gets hot. Really hot. Because the heat is so intense, the materials can expand and contract. Make sure your mounting brackets are solid. You don’t want your heater sagging over time just because the metal shifted a bit.
Why bother with the upgrade?
It mostly comes down to not wanting to climb a ladder every season to replace a burnt-out bulb. When you go with a waterproof infrared setup, the internal electronics aren’t getting hammered by steam every morning. It’s a simple swap that just… works.
