
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Your House From Burning Down)
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is basically like picking a fight with steam. When you tuck a heater into the ceiling, you’re creating a little pocket where condensation loves to hang out. If that moisture hits a live electrical terminal? That’s how you get a short circuit or something much worse.
Dealing with the Damp
The real danger zone is where the power lead meets the heating element. Most cheap plastic housings just can’t handle it. They warp, they crack, and suddenly you’ve got a direct path for water to hit the wiring. That’s why we stick to high-temp silicone or ceramic insulators. These things don’t care if it’s 100°C inside the unit or if the room is like a sauna. And please, check your IP ratings. We use sealed gaskets and special coatings on the internals to stop water from “creeping” its way into the electrical housing. It’s all about keeping the wet stuff away from the sparky stuff.
Grounding and Safety Nets
With a recessed setup, you absolutely need a dedicated earth ground. We wire these so that if there’s even a tiny bit of leakage, the RCD trips and kills the power instantly. It’s a fail-safe. Better to have the power go out for a second than to have a live chassis. We also use quartz glass tubes with specific end-caps. This keeps the filament isolated from the metal reflector, so the reflector doesn’t accidentally become a live wire.
The Trade-off
Here’s the catch: safety takes up space. To keep things safe, you need air gaps and ceramic barriers. You can’t just shrink the box to fit a tight ceiling without risking a safety violation. If you’re really squeezed for room up there, you might have to go with a lower wattage unit. It’s a bummer, but having a slightly less powerful heater is way better than compromising on the safety clearances.
