
Getting Your Bathroom Heat Just Right
When you’re picking out an infrared lamp for your bathroom, the instinct is usually to go for the biggest, most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really about finding a balance between the heat and the actual size of your room so you aren’t wasting electricity or shivering in the cold. Let’s talk numbers. If you’ve got a small bathroom—something under 4 square meters—you’ll probably be happy with a 250W to 400W lamp. In a tiny space, a massive heater is actually a bad idea. It’ll overheat the room way too fast, forcing the system to click on and off constantly. That’s a great way to wear out your relays way sooner than they should. Now, if you’re dealing with a big master bath (around 6 to 10 square meters), you’ll want to look at 600W to 1000W setups. And since these are shortwave infrared lamps, they don’t bother trying to warm up all the air in the room. Instead, they heat you and the things you’re touching. It’s a great feeling—you get that instant warmth the second you step in, even if there’s a draft coming from a window. Don’t ignore the hardware. Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Between the steam and the occasional splash, moisture is everywhere. We use quartz glass tubes with special seals to keep that dampness away from the electrodes. If those seals leak, the lamp will just corrode from the inside and burn out. Plus, do yourself a favor and make sure your fixtures use R7s or similar snap-in connectors. It makes replacing a bulb a five-second job rather than a project. One more thing: please, use a moisture-resistant junction box and IP-rated housing. If you skip this, your electrical terminals will probably oxidize and crust over in a few months. It’s just not worth the risk. The “Hot Spot” Problem There is a trade-off here. Sure, higher wattage gets you warm faster, but it can feel… aggressive. If you put a 1000W lamp in a tiny shower stall, it won’t feel like a cozy spa; it’ll feel like a heat lamp at a buffet. It can actually sting your skin. The trick is to spread the heat out. Instead of one giant “sun” in the ceiling, use a few lower-wattage lamps. It creates a steady “curtain” of warmth that feels natural and comfortable, without any of those annoying hot spots.
