
Speeding Up Your Bake with Halogen IR
If you’ve ever tried to push more parts per minute through a convection line, you know exactly where the wall is. Air is just slow. It takes forever to move heat into the product, and eventually, you can’t speed up the belt any further without ending up with raw centers. That’s why we use shortwave halogen infrared heaters in our rotary ovens. Instead of waiting on the air to do the heavy lifting, these heaters hit the product surface directly. It lets you crank up the belt speed while still getting the core cooked through. The magic of shortwave heat Think of it like this: standard quartz tubes are fine, but halogen lamps bring a much heavier punch. Because of the tungsten filament and the halogen gas, they put out shortwave radiation that sinks into the product way faster. And the best part? It’s instant. You don’t have to waste an hour preheating a massive oven cavity. You flip the switch, and the heat is just… there. Getting the hardware right When we’re setting these up for rotary lines, we have to be careful with the power. You need your wattage and voltage to line up perfectly with your power rail. If they don’t, you’ll get voltage drops across those long conveyor runs, and nothing works the way it should. High-wattage tubes give you the power needed for those fast lines, but they’re tough on connectors. We usually stick with R7s or SK15 bases. They fit tight, which is huge because the last thing you want is a connection vibrating loose while the oven is spinning. The trade-offs Now, fast heat comes with a catch. If you just crank the wattage to move more product, you’ll probably scorch the outside before the middle is even warm. It’s a balancing act between where you place the lamps and how fast the product rotates. Also, these things gethot. Really hot. You’ve got to make sure your chassis and your wiring insulation can handle that kind of heat soak. If you cut corners there, your wiring is going to fry. But if your airflow and rotation are already dialed in? Swapping in halogen replacements can easily shave 20-30% off your baking cycle.
